How to Choose FRP Molded Grating: Thickness, Mesh Size, and Surface Options
Choosing FRP molded grating starts with understanding how and where it will be used. A walkway, drainage trench cover, and maintenance platform may each require a different combination of panel thickness, mesh opening, and surface finish.
Fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) molded grating is often selected for its corrosion resistance, relatively low weight, and range of configurations. However, those benefits depend on selecting a product suited to the application.

1. Start With the Application
Before comparing grating options, establish the conditions the finished installation must handle:
- Traffic: Will the grating support pedestrians, carts, equipment, or other loads?
- Support spacing: What is the clear distance between supporting members?
- Exposure: Will the grating encounter water, chemicals, sunlight, or elevated temperatures?
- Openings: Must the surface accommodate small wheels or limit objects falling through?
- Installation: Will panels require cutouts, removable sections, or special fastening arrangements?
These details help determine which products are appropriate. Panel dimensions alone are not enough to make a selection.
2. Choose Thickness Based on Load and Support Spacing
Grating thickness—also called panel depth—affects how a panel performs under load. Within a comparable product family, deeper grating generally provides greater stiffness, but thickness should never be selected in isolation.
Two measurements are especially important:
- Clear span: The unsupported distance between supports. It is not necessarily the same as the overall panel length or width.
- Deflection: The amount the grating bends under load. A panel may meet a strength requirement yet still deflect more than is acceptable for the application.
Load type also matters. A load distributed across a platform differs from a concentrated load beneath an equipment foot or cart wheel.

Check the intended span and loading condition against the table, considering both load capacity and deflection. Do not treat an ultimate or failure load as an allowable working load.
Do not assume that two panels of the same thickness have the same capacity, or that pedestrian grating is suitable for vehicles. If the tables do not address your loading or support arrangement, request clarification before selecting a panel.
For structural applications or unusual loads, have a qualified designer confirm the selection and supporting structure.
3. Match Mesh Size to How the Surface Will Be Used
Mesh configuration determines the size and arrangement of the openings in the grating. It affects drainage, the passage of debris, and how people or wheels interact with the surface.
Standard Open Mesh
Standard open mesh is an option for industrial walkways, platforms, and drainage applications where an open surface is desirable.
Check the actual opening dimensions against the needs of the location, especially where people carry tools or move equipment.
Smaller Openings
Smaller-opening configurations may be appropriate where small objects, footwear, or cart wheels are a concern.
Product names alone are not enough. Compare the clear opening dimensions, rather than relying only on a nominal mesh designation. A mesh measurement may describe the spacing of the grid rather than the unobstructed opening.
Use the applicable FRP molded grating specification to check the mesh dimensions and corresponding load tables. Do not assume that a smaller opening automatically means a higher load capacity.
Where accessibility requirements apply, confirm the applicable opening limits and other requirements for the complete installation. A “mini-mesh” or “heel-friendly” description does not by itself establish compliance.
Covered Grating
Covered grating provides a more continuous walking surface and may help limit items falling through. However, it changes drainage and cleaning requirements.
Use the specifications and load data for the complete covered product rather than assuming it performs identically to open grating.
4. Select a Surface Finish for the Working Conditions
Surface finish affects traction, comfort, and cleaning. Consider whether the area will be dry, wet, oily, or exposed to other contaminants.
Meniscus Surface
A meniscus surface has a concave profile across the tops of the grating bars, creating raised edges. It is one available option for applications requiring traction.
Gritted Surface
A gritted surface incorporates abrasive particles to provide texture. It may be considered for wet or demanding walking areas, subject to the product’s suitability for the exposure.
Grit texture can also affect cleaning and comfort where workers kneel or handle the panels.
Smooth Surface
A smooth finish may suit applications where an abrasive texture is undesirable. Assess traction carefully before selecting it for a walking surface, particularly where moisture or contamination is expected.
No surface is slip-proof. Traction depends on the finish, footwear, contaminants, wear, and maintenance. Ask for relevant slip-resistance information and assess the actual conditions of use.
5. Confirm Resin and Environmental Compatibility
Thickness, mesh, and finish are only part of the specification. The resin system must also suit the environment.
For chemical exposure, provide the chemical name, concentration, operating temperature, and whether contact is occasional or continuous. General descriptions such as “chemical-resistant” are not a substitute for checking product-specific compatibility.
Also confirm any requirements for outdoor exposure, fire performance, or electrical properties using the exact product’s documentation. Load tables do not, by themselves, establish suitability for these conditions.
6. Plan Panel Layout and Fastening Before Ordering
A good panel layout can reduce cutting and simplify installation.
Record the required panel dimensions, support locations, openings, and removable sections. Cutouts may affect how the grating is supported, and panel edges must have suitable bearing.
Confirm the appropriate clips, fastener material, and fastening arrangement. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for fabrication and sealing exposed cut surfaces where required.
