3.2.10 Fasteners

Molded Grating Fastener Options

Product availability: Fiberr does not currently sell grating clips. However, we can assist customers in identifying and selecting an appropriate clip type for their grating, supporting structure, and installation requirements.

Fasteners are essential components for securing molded FRP grating assemblies. They anchor panels to the supporting structure and, where required, connect adjacent panels to improve alignment and stability.

Proper fastening is particularly important in pedestrian-accessible areas, elevated installations, high-vibration environments, and any application where panel displacement could create a fall, trip, or equipment hazard.

Installation guidance: As a general best practice, each grating panel should be secured at all four corners. Additional fasteners may be required along intermediate supports, panel joints, perimeter edges, or high-load areas based on panel size, span, vibration, traffic, wind uplift, and the supporting structure.

Available Fastener Types

C-Type (End Panel) Clip

The C-Type end panel clip is primarily used to connect two adjacent molded grating panels. The opposing clip sections engage the load bars on each side of the panel joint and are tightened together with a bolt.

Connecting adjacent panels helps maintain alignment, reduces differential movement, and minimizes uneven panel edges at the joint. C-Type clips supplement panel-to-support hold-down clips but do not normally replace them.

Common Applications
  • Panel-to-panel joints
  • Large floor assemblies
  • Long walkways
  • Multi-panel platforms
  • Alignment control
Primary function: Joins the ends or edges of two adjacent grating panels.

E-Type (Small Mesh Hold Down) Clip

The E-Type hold-down clip is designed to attach 0.75-inch mesh molded grating to supporting structures. Its compact profile is configured for smaller mesh openings where a conventional saddle-style clip may not fit properly.

The clip should be selected to match the grating mesh, panel depth, supporting-member geometry, required bolt length, and installation access.

Common Applications
  • 0.75-inch mesh grating
  • Minimesh grating
  • Small mesh openings
  • Pedestrian flooring
  • Panel hold-down connections
Primary function: Attaches 0.75-inch mesh molded grating to the supporting structure.

F-Type (End Panel) Clip

The F-Type end panel clip is used to connect adjacent molded FRP grating panels. It engages the adjoining panel edges to help maintain alignment and reduce differential movement at the panel joint.

A fastening bolt is included with the clip order. F-Type end panel clips supplement the clips used to secure each panel to the supporting structure and should not normally be used as a substitute for panel hold-down clips.

Common Applications
  • Adjacent molded FRP panels
  • Panel edge connections
  • Multi-panel platforms
  • Walkway panel joints
  • Panel alignment
Primary function: Connects adjacent molded FRP grating panels. A fastening bolt is included with the clip order.

L/J Type Clip

The L/J Type clip is used at panel edges and perimeter locations where an M-Type saddle clip cannot bear across two adjacent load bars. Its angled or hooked profile captures a single edge bar while the lower portion connects to or hooks beneath the supporting structure.

This clip provides a low-profile edge connection and is particularly useful where the grating terminates beside a wall, frame, curb, structural angle, channel, or other obstruction.

Common Applications
  • Panel perimeters
  • Edge load bars
  • Wall interfaces
  • Angle or channel supports
  • Restricted-access locations
Primary function: Secures an outside panel edge to or beneath the supporting structure.

M-Type (Saddle) Clip

The M-Type saddle clip is a common hold-down option for molded FRP grating installations. Its saddle-shaped upper plate bears across adjacent load bars while a bolt connects the plate to a lower anchor, support clip, or drilled structural member.

The M-Type clip provides clamping pressure across the grating bars, straightforward installation, and relatively easy removal when access beneath the grating is required.

Common Applications
  • Standard molded grating
  • Industrial walkways
  • Platforms
  • Trench covers
  • Pedestrian flooring
Primary function: Secures a grating panel to the supporting structure.

W/WLP-Type (Washer) Clip

The W/WLP-Type washer clip uses a broad, washer-like top plate that spans several closely spaced load bars. The wider bearing surface distributes clamping pressure over a larger portion of the grating than a conventional M-Type saddle clip.

It is particularly useful for minimesh, micromesh, closely spaced mesh, and some covered-grating configurations where the openings are too small for a standard saddle clip or where a wider pressure-distribution plate is preferred.

Common Applications
  • Minimesh
  • Micromesh
  • ADA mesh
  • Covered grating
  • Small mesh openings
Primary function: Provides a wide-area hold-down connection for small-mesh and covered grating.

Wedge Type Clip

The Wedge Type clip is an internal clip designed to fit within a molded grating mesh opening. Its formed sides engage the tapered load bars and lock beneath the wider lower portion of the molded bars.

Because molded grating load bars generally taper from a narrower upper surface to a wider base, the clip develops a mechanical grip inside the mesh without requiring a broad saddle plate across the top.

This creates a low-profile connection with minimal hardware projecting above the walking surface. Compatibility depends on the specific mesh opening, panel depth, load-bar taper, support configuration, and clip dimensions.

Common Applications
  • Low-profile installations
  • Internal mesh fastening
  • Tapered molded bars
  • Restricted top clearance
  • Specialty grating assemblies
Primary function: Locks within the molded mesh opening by engaging the tapered load bars.

Fastener Selection Summary

Clip Type Primary Function Typical Use Selection Considerations
C-Type (End Panel) Connects adjacent grating panel edges or ends Multi-panel walkways, platforms, and floor assemblies Supplements, but does not replace, panel-to-support hold-down clips.
E-Type (Small Mesh Hold Down) Secures 0.75-inch mesh grating to the supporting structure Minimesh, 0.75-inch mesh, pedestrian flooring, and other small-mesh grating Confirm the mesh opening, panel depth, support geometry, attachment method, and required bolt length.
F-Type (End Panel) Connects adjacent molded FRP grating panels Panel joints, multi-panel platforms, and walkway assemblies A fastening bolt is included with the clip order. Use separate hold-down clips to secure the panels to the supporting structure.
L/J Type Secures a perimeter or outside load bar Panel edges, walls, frames, curbs, angles, channels, and restricted locations Used where a saddle clip cannot span adjacent load bars. Confirm the hook or angle geometry, support dimensions, and bolt length.
M-Type (Saddle) Provides a panel-to-support hold-down connection General molded grating, walkways, platforms, and trench covers Confirm compatibility with mesh size, panel depth, support type, attachment method, and required bolt length.
W/WLP-Type (Washer) Provides a wide-area hold-down for closely spaced mesh Minimesh, micromesh, ADA mesh, and covered grating Select the plate size and bolt arrangement for the specific mesh, panel depth, and supporting structure.
Wedge Type Locks within a molded mesh opening by engaging tapered bars Low-profile and specialty molded-grating installations Compatibility depends on the mesh opening, panel depth, load-bar taper, support configuration, and exact clip geometry.
Inspection and maintenance: Clips and associated hardware should be inspected periodically for looseness, corrosion, deformation, missing hardware, support movement, and panel wear. Inspection frequency should reflect the application, vibration, traffic, environmental exposure, and consequences of clip failure. Replace damaged or significantly corroded hardware promptly.
