3.1 Product Overview
Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic Molded Grating
Fiberglass reinforced plastic, or FRP, is a composite material consisting of continuous glass-fiber reinforcement within a polyester or vinyl ester matrix resin. The resin system provides high physical strength, chemical resistance, and durability.
FRP molded gratings are manufactured in open, heated molds using a wet-lamination process with continuous glass fiber, resin, chemical additives, and pigment. After curing and cooling, the gratings are removed from the mold. The resulting product is lightweight, corrosion resistant, dielectric, and exhibits high chemical and mechanical strength. Gratings are available in multiple resin systems, colors, and surface finishes to meet a wide range of application requirements.
During production, continuous E-glass fibers are layered in alternating directions and fully wetted with resin. This process delivers excellent corrosion resistance and high bidirectional strength in both transverse and longitudinal directions. Compared with metal gratings, FRP molded gratings are significantly lighter, easier to fabricate, and require minimal maintenance. A variety of molds are available, providing flexibility in panel sizes, thicknesses, and mesh patterns.
The main components of FRP molded grating are:
- Resin — Provides chemical resistance, flexibility, and UV stability. Resin types are selected according to the environmental and service conditions.
- Glass Fiber — Continuous, multilayered fiberglass rovings form the structural backbone of FRP molded grating. A roving is a bundle of untwisted, continuous glass filaments that can be laid in alternating orientations within the mold. This configuration distributes loads evenly and provides high tensile and flexural strength in both longitudinal and transverse directions. The use of rovings ensures uniform reinforcement throughout the panel, improving impact resistance and long-term durability.
- Chemical Additives — Enhancements such as UV stabilizers, flame retardants, and smoke-density reducers improve product performance.
- Pigment — Enables production in a wide range of colors to support functional, architectural, safety, and aesthetic requirements.
