3.2.3 Mesh Configurations

Molded Grating Mesh Options

Fiberr USA offers a range of molded FRP/GRP mesh patterns designed to meet different structural, safety, accessibility, and application requirements. Each configuration provides distinct advantages in terms of load capacity, opening size, drainage, ventilation, slip resistance, and compatibility with mobility aids.

Selection should be based on the required clear opening, anticipated loading, support span, pedestrian or vehicle use, applicable accessibility requirements, and the operating environment.

Primary Mesh Configurations

Standard molded FRP grating with a 1.5 by 1.5 inch mesh pattern

Standard Mesh

FRP molded standard-mesh grating is the most widely used configuration. Its open pattern provides an effective balance of strength, drainage, ventilation, and panel weight.

Standard mesh offers high mechanical performance and excellent corrosion resistance for general industrial, commercial, and architectural applications where moderate load-bearing capability and slip resistance are required.

Common Applications
  • Platforms
  • Walkways
  • Trench covers
  • Industrial flooring
  • Maintenance access

Minimesh

FRP molded minimesh grating provides the corrosion resistance and structural characteristics of standard mesh with a substantially reduced opening size.

The smaller openings help prevent objects such as screws, nuts, bolts, tools, and other small items from falling through the walking surface. Minimesh is also better suited to wheelchairs, prams, carts, and pedestrian-heavy environments than larger standard-mesh configurations.

ADA compliance must be verified from the actual clear opening between the bearing bars. A nominal mesh designation by itself does not establish compliance.

Common Applications
  • Municipal parks
  • Pedestrian bridges
  • Piers
  • Poolside decks
  • Public walkways
  • Cart-access areas
  • Docks
High-capacity molded FRP grating with a 1 by 2 inch mesh pattern

High-Capacity Mesh

High-capacity molded grating is designed with thicker load bars, heavier reinforcement, and increased panel depth to provide superior strength-to-weight performance.

These gratings are intended for applications requiring higher load capacity or reduced deflection. They combine corrosion resistance and electrical nonconductivity with the ability to support more demanding structural conditions.

Common Applications
  • Industrial platforms
  • Equipment access ways
  • Heavy-duty walkways
  • Process areas
  • Vehicular traffic areas

Stair Tread

Molded FRP stair-tread grating is manufactured for use as a dedicated stair surface and may include an integrated slip-resistant finish and reinforced leading-edge support.

Stair treads can be supplied with contrasting or bullnosed edges on one or both sides to improve visibility, durability, and pedestrian safety. They can be paired with appropriate fastener systems for secure installation.

Common Applications
  • Industrial stairs
  • Public-access stairs
  • Marine stairs
  • Process platforms
  • Maintenance access

ADA Mesh

ADA-compliant molded grating is designed to provide an accessible and stable walking surface for users of wheelchairs, walking sticks, crutches, strollers, and other mobility aids. These products use reduced clear openings and an appropriate slip-resistant walking surface.

For FRP grating installed on an ADA-accessible route, the governing requirements include the size and orientation of the surface openings:

  1. Openings must not permit passage of a 1/2-inch (13 mm) diameter sphere.
  2. Where openings are elongated, the long dimension must be oriented perpendicular to the dominant direction of travel.
  3. The finished walking surface must be stable, firm, and slip resistant.

ADA compliance is determined by the actual clear opening between the load bars, not the nominal center-to-center mesh dimension. Minimesh and other closely spaced configurations may satisfy the opening requirement when the measured clear opening does not exceed 1/2 inch (13 mm).

As a general dimensional guideline, a nominal mesh dimension of 0.75 inch or less may produce a clear opening of 1/2 inch or less when the bearing bar is approximately 0.25 inch wide. Actual product dimensions must still be verified before the grating is specified as ADA compliant.

Common Applications
  • Accessible ramps
  • Public walkways
  • Transit facilities
  • Municipal facilities
  • Wheelchair routes
  • Pedestrian bridges

Mesh Configuration Comparison

Mesh Type Primary Advantage Typical Applications Selection Considerations
Standard Mesh Balanced strength, drainage, ventilation, and cost efficiency Platforms, walkways, trench covers, and general industrial flooring Appropriate where larger openings are acceptable and accessibility requirements do not require reduced clear openings
Minimesh Reduced openings and improved compatibility with small wheels and pedestrian traffic Parks, piers, bridges, docks, pool decks, public walkways, and cart routes Verify the actual clear opening when ADA compliance is required
High-Capacity Mesh Higher load capacity and reduced deflection Heavy-duty platforms, equipment access, process areas, and vehicular applications Confirm load type, support span, deflection limit, and required panel depth
Stair Tread Dedicated stair geometry with enhanced leading-edge safety Industrial, marine, municipal, and public-access stairways Confirm tread width, depth, nosing, fasteners, support, and applicable building requirements
ADA Mesh Accessible surface with reduced clear openings Ramps, accessible walkways, transit facilities, and public routes Clear openings must not pass a 1/2-inch (13 mm) sphere; elongated openings must be oriented perpendicular to travel
Important: Mesh names and nominal dimensions are descriptive product classifications. Compliance with accessibility, structural, fire, slip-resistance, or building requirements must be based on the actual product dimensions, surface finish, support conditions, and project-specific criteria.
