3.2.9 Panel Cut & Dimensional Tolerances

Molded Panel Sizes

Molded grating panels can be produced in any practical size up to the maximum dimensions of the applicable mold.

General panel-size guidance: Common nominal molded grating panel sizes include 3 ft × 10 ft, 4 ft × 8 ft, 4 ft × 10 ft, 4 ft × 12 ft, and 5 ft × 12 ft. The exact closed-web dimensions depend on the mesh pitch and perimeter load-bar thickness.

Panel Sizing Methods

Panel sizes smaller than the full mold area can be achieved through three methods:

Molded to Size

Damming

A physical barrier, or dam, is placed inside the mold before casting to block resin flow and reduce the effective mold area. This creates a smaller finished panel directly during molding without the need for post-processing cuts.

Cut After Molding

Open Cut

The grating is molded to full size and then trimmed with exposed, open cells along the cut edges. This is often used when panels will be framed, banded, or installed in applications where exposed open mesh is acceptable.

An open cut provides greater dimensional flexibility because the cut does not have to coincide with a complete mesh cell or perimeter load bar.

Finished Perimeter

Closed Cut

After molding, the panel is cut to size, and the cut edges are finished with load-bar material to close the perimeter cells. This provides a smoother outside edge and prevents exposed mesh openings, improving appearance and safety in certain applications.

To retain a completely closed perimeter, the finished panel dimension must correspond with the molded mesh pattern. The cut cannot be made at an arbitrary point through the center of a cell and still retain a complete outside load bar.

  1. Each mesh has a repeating center-to-center pitch. Closed edges can occur only at positions that correspond with complete cells and outside load bars.
  2. The closest closed-web dimension is determined by selecting the nearest whole number of mesh pitches and adding the approximate outside perimeter web.
  3. The finished panel may therefore be slightly larger or smaller than the nominal 3 ft, 4 ft, 5 ft, 8 ft, 10 ft, or 12 ft designation.
  4. If an exact nominal dimension is more important than maintaining a closed perimeter, the panel can be supplied with an open-edge cut.
  5. For rectangular mesh, the pitch differs by direction. The panel orientation must therefore be established before the closest closed-web width and length are calculated.
Closest closed-web dimension ≈ nearest whole-cell multiple + outside perimeter web

Calculated Closed-Web Panel Sizes

How to read this table: Each cell shows the closest calculated closed-web size to the nominal panel designation. These values are general planning dimensions and do not account for the limitations of any particular production mold. The first mesh dimension is assumed to run across the panel width, and the second mesh dimension is assumed to run along the panel length.

General-guidance limitation: These dimensions are calculated from nominal mesh pitch and approximate perimeter-web thickness. Actual finished dimensions may vary with the specific mesh geometry, outside load-bar dimensions, dam placement, cutting method, and normal production tolerances.
Ordering closed-web panels: State the nominal requested panel size, mesh profile, panel depth, and required orientation. Also confirm whether Fiberr may adjust the finished width and length to the nearest closed-web dimensions. Specify an open-edge cut when the exact nominal size takes priority over maintaining closed perimeter cells.

Dimensional Tolerances

All molded grating is subject to standard dimensional tolerances to ensure consistency across production. These allowances apply to both full-size molded panels and panels reduced by cutting or damming.

Table 14: Dimensional Tolerances

Tolerance Type Allowance (Metric) Allowance (Imperial)
Panel Tolerances: Width, Length, and Diagonal ±2 mm ±0.08 in
Cut Panel Tolerances: Width, Length, and Diagonal
If the cut falls on or must align with a load bar, the difference from the nominal requested size may be greater.
±4 mm ±0.16 in
Mesh Pattern Tolerance ±1.5 mm
Outside load bars may be approximately 1 mm larger.
±0.06 in
Outside load bars may be approximately 0.04 in larger.
