Roving Configuration Overview

Fiberr molded grating is available with two fiberglass roving configurations that balance panel stiffness, deflection performance, impact resistance, and cutting durability. The primary differences between the configurations are the TEX rating of the roving and the number of laminate layers placed in the mold.

What is TEX? TEX is a measure of linear glass-fiber density and represents the weight of the fiber in grams per 1,000 meters. Higher-TEX roving contains more glass per strand. Lower-TEX roving contains less glass per strand but allows a greater number of reinforcement lines to be distributed throughout the laminate.

4800 TEX Roving – 5.5-Layer Configuration

This construction uses heavier 4800 TEX roving. The laminate consists of five full layers of roving placed in alternating directions, with a sixth layer added in only one direction. Because the sixth layer is not applied in both directions, this construction is referred to as a 5.5-layer configuration.

The heavier roving provides a higher glass mass per strand and a slightly more open reinforcement pattern. This produces a stiffer panel with reduced deflection under load and strong structural performance in walkway and platform applications.

2400 TEX Roving – 7-Layer Configuration

This configuration uses lighter 2400 TEX roving applied in seven full layers in alternating directions for 1.5-inch-deep molded grating. The corresponding standard construction for 1-inch-deep grating uses 4.5 layers.

Because the individual strands are lighter, more reinforcement lines can be distributed throughout the laminate. This tighter strand spacing improves resistance to surface chipping and cracking when the grating is saw-cut or subjected to localized impact.

Unless otherwise specified, Fiberr molded grating is produced using the 2400 TEX configuration. This construction provides a dense and uniform reinforcement pattern with improved resistance to chipping, cracking, and localized impact during fabrication and service.

Roving Placement Quality Guideline

Internal quality guideline: There is no formal industry standard governing the exact distance between the outer roving layer and the top or bottom surface of molded FRP grating. Fiberr targets a distance of approximately 1/8 in (3–4 mm) from the surface to the nearest roving layer.

This distance is balanced against the requirement that all glass reinforcement remain fully encapsulated in resin, with no exposed fibers at the surface. In configurations using heavier roving, such as the 5.5-layer construction, the distance to the surface may be slightly greater than in a 7-layer configuration.

Fiberr maintains this distance as close as practicable while ensuring complete glass wet-out, adequate resin cover, and long-term durability of the molded grating.
