for routine applications or fire-retardant resin systems where building

conditions require enhanced surface-burning performance.
ASTM E84 Surface Burning Test

Fire performance is evaluated using ASTM E84, Standard Test Method
for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials. The test
is conducted in a tunnel apparatus and measures flame travel and
smoke generation as the specimen is exposed to a controlled burner.
Flame Spread Index (FSI)
Measures the relative extent and rate of flame travel along the
surface of the test specimen.
Smoke Developed Index (SDI)
Measures the relative density of smoke generated while the
specimen is exposed to the test flame.
