3.2.7 Fire Retardant

Fire-Retardant Molded Grating

Fiberr USA produces molded FRP/GRP grating with and without fire-retardant additives. Customers may specify standard resin systems for routine applications or fire-retardant resin systems where building codes, project specifications, fire-safety requirements, or operating conditions require enhanced surface-burning performance.

Fire performance is evaluated using ASTM E84, Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials. The test is conducted in a tunnel apparatus and measures flame travel and smoke generation as the specimen is exposed to a controlled burner.

Flame Spread Index (FSI)

Measures the relative extent and rate of flame travel along the surface of the test specimen.

Smoke Developed Index (SDI)

Measures the relative density of smoke generated while the specimen is exposed to the test flame.

During testing, the sample began to ignite approximately 55 seconds after burner exposure. The flame front reached a maximum distance of approximately 0.3 m after about 86 seconds.
