Molded Grating Grit Finishes

Fiberr USA offers molded FRP/GRP grating with a range of grit finishes to provide slip resistance and accommodate different operating environments. Grit may be applied during or after curing and serves as the primary surface treatment for reducing slip hazards in wet, oily, contaminated, or high-traffic conditions.

Grit selection is based on the required balance of slip resistance, pedestrian comfort, footwear, cleaning requirements, wear conditions, and the type of contaminants expected in service.

Finer grit is generally selected for pedestrian, ADA-accessible, or barefoot applications where comfort and cleanability are priorities. Coarser grit is used for industrial and heavy-duty environments where maximum traction is required.

Available Grit Sizes

Grit Size (#) Common Name Approximate Size (Microns) Typical COF (Dry) Typical COF (Wet)
7# Fine Approximately 150–250 0.70–0.80 0.60–0.70
6# Medium-Fine Approximately 250–350 0.70–0.80 0.60–0.70
5# Medium Approximately 350–500 0.75–0.85 0.65–0.75
5# Quartz Sand Medium (Quartz Sand) Approximately 400–500 0.75–0.85 0.65–0.75
4# Medium-Coarse Approximately 500–700 0.80–0.90 0.70–0.80
4-1# Coarse Approximately 700–1,000 0.80–0.95 0.70–0.85
3# Industrial / Very Coarse Approximately 1,000–1,500 0.85–0.95 0.75–0.85

Application Guidance

  1. Fine and Medium-Fine Grit (7#–6#) Recommended for pedestrian areas, ADA-accessible walkways, poolside locations, docks, marinas, and barefoot applications where comfort, reduced abrasiveness, and cleanability are priorities.
  2. Medium Grit (5#) The standard choice for most industrial and commercial flooring, walkways, platforms, access routes, and general wet-service applications.
  3. Quartz Sand (5#) A natural aggregate finish with a slightly different appearance and texture. It is commonly selected for exterior walkways, outdoor platforms, recreational areas, and architectural applications.
  4. Medium-Coarse to Industrial Grit (4#–3#) Recommended for heavy industrial service, oily or slippery operating conditions, ramps, processing areas, loading locations, and applications requiring maximum slip resistance.
Coefficient of friction: The listed COF values are typical reference ranges. Actual slip resistance may vary based on grit material, aggregate size, resin system, surface contamination, wear, footwear, test method, moisture, and installation conditions.
