ADA Mesh
ADA-compliant molded grating is designed to provide an accessible
and stable walking surface for users of wheelchairs, walking
sticks, crutches, strollers, and other mobility aids. These
products use reduced clear openings and an appropriate
slip-resistant walking surface.
For FRP grating installed on an ADA-accessible route, the
governing requirements include the size and orientation of the
surface openings:
-
Openings must not permit passage of a 1/2-inch (13 mm)
diameter sphere.
-
Where openings are elongated, the long dimension must be
oriented perpendicular to the dominant direction of travel.
-
The finished walking surface must be stable, firm, and slip
resistant.
ADA compliance is determined by the actual clear opening between
the load bars, not the nominal center-to-center mesh dimension.
Minimesh and other closely spaced configurations may satisfy the
opening requirement when the measured clear opening does not
exceed 1/2 inch (13 mm).
As a general dimensional guideline, a nominal mesh dimension of
0.75 inch or less may produce a clear opening of 1/2 inch or less
when the bearing bar is approximately 0.25 inch wide. Actual
product dimensions must still be verified before the grating is
specified as ADA compliant.
